success-targetSuccess can be defined in many ways.  What is deemed successful for one person, may not have the same meaning to another.  Success is individual and how you measure it, is up to you.

One person may deem themselves to be successful if they get a promotion at work.  Another may experience a victory by getting a job or seeing their dream job advertised and open for application.

Are relationships considered as an achievement?  Is success gauged by the quantity of people in one’s life, or is it more about the quality of a few relationships?  For some, getting a divorce is success, for others success is determined by repairing a relationship and strengthening a bond.

While some may want to get a gold medal at the Olympics, others may want to stay fit, and another will feel victorious if they can simply hold a spoon and eat independently.

Maintaining emotional and mental wellness could be viewed as success by one person, whereas getting out of bed in the morning and making it through the day without a mental breakdown, is an achievement by another.

Buying a new car is a triumph for one and being able to buy enough food for your family is a realization of success.

You get the point I am trying to make?

All too often, people compare themselves to others.  They look around and see who has more money, a bigger house, gone on more vacations and so on.  These are all monetary successes and with all of the marketing and selling we are exposed to nowadays; it is no wonder that material success is what we look toward.

However, there are so many ways to experience success.

To start, think about what you value.  Is it family, balance, courage, creativity, growth, learning, justice, parenting, peace, fun, power, self-discipline, simplicity, tradition, travel, and trust?  Do you value the opportunity to give back or make a difference?  What about uniqueness and originality?

The next step is to clarify your goals, based on what you value.  What do you want to do about it?  How do you want to get there?  Is there an internal feeling that will motivate or is it about external recognition?  Do you want to change the world, or do you want to simply, be?

Once you know what you want to do, work toward it.  If there is a setback, there may be a need to redefine your goals, however, your revised goals will determine your new success.

Whatever it is, success is defined by you.  It’s about what you value in life and what you want to accomplish accordingly.  Make every effort to not compare someone else’s success to yours.  We can all be successful, for no matter how big or small, success can be defined in many ways.  Make your success about you, for you have the power to define it!
